   Session 3 -- Activity 1

Activity 1 ~~ Sight Vocabulary and Word Identification Strategies (45 minutes)

Objective: Familiarize yourself with the teaching process for building a Word Wall.

In Session 2, you learned about phonics and activities for recognizing words. To complete this segment, familiarize yourself with Janiel Wagstaff's teaching process for building a Word Wall, a bulletin board of high frequency words which have familiar spelling patterns. Also, explore the development of self-monitoring behaviors in beginning readers.

Activity: Read "Building Practical Knowledge of Letter-Sound Correspondences: A Beginner's Word Wall and Beyond" (The Reading Teacher, vol. 51, Dec. 1997/Jan. 1998, pp. 298-304) by Janiel Wagstaff, and then respond to the questions below.

Question 1
Describe the sequence of activities Wagstaff uses to make a Word Wall for one week.

Question 2
What are the advantages of the process for teaching letter-sound relationships using a Word Wall?

Now check yourself by comparing your responses with the important information below.

  • Janiel Wagstaff's sequence for building a Word Wall:
    • Read, recite and dramatize a nursery rhyme.
    • Select key words from the rhyme for later posting on the Word Wall.
    • Say and write beginning sounds from those words on a daily basis.
    • Add words to the word wall.
    • Add nursery rhymes to students' favorite folders.
  • Letter sound knowledge is reinforced through appropriate word play.
  • Learning is purposeful rather than done in isolation (e.g.,Letter of the Week).
  • The Word Wall lessons teach phonemic awareness and letter-sound knowledge.

How do you rate? Use the following rubric to give yourself a score.
3 - responded with most of the items in the Word Wall sequence and mentioned three reasons the Word Wall process is valuable.
2 - responded with some of the items in the Word Wall sequence and mentioned at least two reasons the Word Wall process is valuable.
1 -responded with two items in the Word Wall sequence and mentioned at least one reason the Word Wall process is valuable.

Now, proceed to Activity 2
