   Session 3 -- Activity 3

Book Collection and Leveling (2 hours 30 minutes)

Note: When you complete this assignment, save your work to submit to the course facilitator.

Objective: Compile a list of books for your library and categorize them by level.

Activity: Select a grade level (K, 1, or 2). Using the library to compile a listing of books for your library and categorize the books as "easy" "just right" or "hard". You may change this classification as you observe your own children in the selection process. Write the listing in the document, "Book Collection Worksheet ". Be sure to include the title, author, date of publisher, and date of publication. You will want to have 30 books for independent reading that include both fiction and non-fiction.

Consult the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system of books to see the descriptions of texts at various levels. You'll need to access the article, "Text Leveling and Little Books in First Grade," by Hoffman, Roser, et. al. in the Tech Report #1-010 at the National Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA) web site.

Think about the children in your class. Which children do you think will select some specific titles? Create a chart that matches children to books you think they will select. Observe your own children in the selection process and determine whether your judgments were fairly accurate.

Submit: Book Collection Worksheet. You should name this document "Session 3 Required Activity". Submit assignment to facilitator.
