5 ~~ Print Rich Environment Activity (45 minutes)
Objective:
Develop a plan to arrange your classroom to create a print-rich environment.
Activity:
Read, "A Literacy Framework: The Classroom Environment"
in Mondo Bookshop, Stage 2, pp. 17-20. Then draw or describe in writing
how you would arrange your classroom to create a print/literacy-rich environment.
Factors to consider in your classroom
plan are:
o Space for large group meetings with
at least two easels or big book holders
o Space for meetings with teacher-guided groups
o Space for center activities (e.g., writing, listening, alphabet, independent reading)
o Space for individual work (desks, tables, easels, etc)
o Space for keeping books and other materials
o Space through which students can move easily
Self-check your work by responding to
the following questions:
- Did you plan space for a variety of books,
magazines, and print sources?
- Did you plan space to accommodate children
accessing the Word Wall, using sentence strips in a holder, writing
signs, and writing messages in the mail center?
- Did you provide for a morning message
spot? Was the daily schedule visible?
- Did you incorporate space for a Word
Wall?
- Were children given the opportunity to
sign-in as they came to class?
- Did you have your small group teaching
center apart from other centers?
- Were books arranged so that children
could access them easily? Were the spines showing?
- Were all supplies at the centers?
- Was space provided for large group/whole
class meetings? Draw or describe in writing how your classroom would
be arranged.
Rate yourself -
