Activity
2 ~~ Assessment Overview (2 hours 30 minutes)
Objective: Consider the links between
evaluation and instruction in literacy education.
Activity: Read the article, Noticing and Responding to
Learners: Literacy Evaluation and Instruction in the Primary Grades,
Reading Teacher, April 1998, pp. 550 - 559. After reading the article,
respond to the Reflection
Log for the article. Write one or two sentences in response to each
question.
Context: In this article, Karen West demonstrates how instruction
and assessment are linked in her kindergarten classroom. Her teaching
style is a response to what she observes children doing with literacy.
Now check yourself by comparing your responses from the Reflection Log
with the important points below:
a. Literacy events include read alouds, writer's workshops, shared
readings, centers, choice times, and "Drop Everything and Read"
times. Additional events might include guided reading, spelling, social
studies and science classes, and discussion groups in response to reading.
(This response is customized to your own classroom).
b. Noticing when students interpret books and make connections
is important for assessing comprehension. Good readers use the strategies
of questioning, predicting, and linking books to their experience.
c. Children can volunteer what they know about letters and sounds.
The teacher can also ask them to find words that begin or end with specific
sounds.
d. Asking a child to read aloud during a reading conference in
the "Drop Everything and Read" time provides information about
whether the child is using meaning, letter-sound cues, and the structure
of language during reading.
e. Data are managed in binders, clipboards, post it notes, and
portfolios. The binder provides information about each child through checklists
and anecdotal records.
When you’re finished, please proceed to Activity 3.
