   Session 5 -- Activity 1

Activity 1 ~~ Book Time (5 minutes)

Objective: Consider another example of a good expository book for children. You can find this and other wonderful books at the library.

Context: This short narrative by Ronald Himler includes wonderful illustrations that enable students to visualize the farm setting and picture the main character searching for work with his grandfather, or abuelo. It would be appropriate for an early fluency stage reader who can read dialogue easily and self-correct when necessary to attain meaning. Eve Bunting is a popular children's author. She has written over 50 books. In The Wall, she tells a story about the Vietnam Memorial on the mall. In How Many Days to America she describes the difficult journey of present day families who leave their oppressed countries to come to the United States. Smokey Night, which tells of violence in a riot-torn city through the eyes of a child, is considered controversial by some. All of these are wonderful, but her best book is probably A Day's Work.

When you're finished, please proceed to Activity 2.
