   Session 6 -- Activity 1

Activity 1 ~~ Four Levels of Support (45 minutes)

Objective: Reflect on Guided Reading as a teaching technique.

Context: In their book, Guided Reading, Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell demonstrate the relationship between teacher support and child control in reading.

Activity: Begin by viewing the PowerPoint presentation entitled "Developing Comprehension is Important in the Primary Grades."

Then review the Fountas/Pinnell model depicting the 4 Levels of Support.

As you study the model, reflect on your current use of the techniques outlined-and think about the degree to which you currently use these levels of support.

Now view the video segment.

Context: The video begins with a discussion of guided reading and the importance of building children's background knowledge prior to reading. The video continues with another take on Fountas and Pinnell's levels of support-reading to, with, and by children. It concludes with a brief review and a discussion of flexible grouping.

When you're finished, please proceed to Activity 2.
