   Session 6 -- Activity 5

Activity 5 ~~ Using Link & Think (30 minutes)

Objective: Learn more about Link & Think and use it with your students.

Activity: Read "Vocabulary Development in the Primary Grades."

Then study this completed Link & Think, done by second graders, and print out a blank copy of the Link & Think form. Following the methods outlined in the reading above, complete this activity with your students.

Remember to consider the amount of modeling your students may need. Also think about the number (3 to 6) and type (nouns work best) of words you will use to provide the students with a successful experience. You may want to choose at least three words (fewer makes it difficult to connect them meaningfully).

To provide additional support, a group or pair of children can work on this activity together. When they share what they wrote, accept all responses. You might say, "Great guess!" or "Good thinking!" if their definitions are not accurate; they can be corrected after reading. In fact, it might be helpful to include these words in their purpose for reading (or listening).

For Further Consideration:

Question 1
How did your students respond to this activity?

Question 2
If you use it again, what modifications might you make?

When you're finished, please proceed to Activity 6.
