   Session 6 -- Activity 6

Activity 6 ~~ Utilizing Reading Strategies
(2 hours 30 minutes)

Note: When you complete this assignment, save your work to submit to the course facilitator.

Objective: Learn more about primary reading comprehension strategies, and consider the degree to which you incorporate strategy instruction in your classroom.

Activity: Read the following short pieces about the importance of primary readers acquiring reading strategies, and view the sample activities to develop those strategies. Click the document title below to read the required materials:


Then, using the Strategic Lesson planning sheet, and plan a strategy lesson for a small group of students who exhibit similar needs.

After completing your plan, answer the following two questions.

Question 1
How did your students respond to your lesson? Was it appropriately targeted?

Question 2
How did their performance influence your thinking for subsequent lessons?

After answering these questions, view this video segment.

This segment includes an excerpt from the distinguished educator, Richard Allington, who reminds the viewer that reading strategies extend to the decoding level. After viewing this clip, you will move on the Activity 7.

In Activity 7, the focus shifts to reading non-fiction. You will read a piece that provides information about the importance of developing skill in reading non-fiction. It also presents a detailed plan for teaching students about non-fiction text. As you read this section, reflect on the degree of emphasis you have placed on the reading of non-fiction, both in materials and instruction.

Submit: Strategic Lesson Plan Sheet, Reply to Question 1 and 2. You should title this document "Session 6 Required Activity". Submit assignment to facilitator.
