Objective: Consider the factors that affect children's motivation
to learn to read.
Activity: View this video
segment. These video clips capture children expressing
their feelings about reading, and remind us that the goal of all our instruction
is to help students become lifelong readers. As you watch these clips,
think about what your students might say about reading.
Now read the article entitled, "Motivating the
Primary Reader". This article provides a comprehensive look
at the variety of factors that can affect motivation. As you read the
article, think about your students and your knowledge of them in light
of the areas discussed in the article. When you have finished reading,
proceed to the questions at the end of the "References Cited."
Finally, read "Creating classroom cultures that
foster reading motivation." The author, Dr. Linda Gambrell, is one of the foremost experts
in reading and motivation in the country. Although this article was published
in 1996, it represents timeless information about what motivates students
to read. As you read the article, see if you can find a connection with
the students you teach. Also think about how your instruction mirrors
the suggested activities.
