Activity
2 ~~ The Teacher as an Explicit Model (30 minutes)
Objective: Generate a list of ten actions you can take to demonstrate
to your children that you are a lover of reading.
Context: You have now familiarized yourself with the research
and recommendations of Dr. Gambrell. Throughout the next five activities,
you will have an opportunity to extend and apply the ideas presented in
her work. In this particular activity, you will think about and generate
a list of ten actions you can take to demonstrate to your children that
you are a lover of reading. To get started, think about the following
personal and school areas.
- What do you personally like about reading
that you can share?
- What did you like to read when you were
a child?
- What current literacy practices do you
engage in (member of a book club, visit public libraries, etc.)?
- What kinds of things can you do during
the school day to show students that you value books and reading?
Activity:
Make a list of your ten actions on a separate page. To help you along, one action
is completed for you and listed below. The technique/action will be a familiar
one to you- Reading Aloud to students. Before completing the rest of your
list, view the Read Aloud Facts & Tips.
Action 1: Reading Aloud
to Students (see link: Read
Aloud Facts & Tips)
"I will make
sure I read aloud to my students at least once a day. I will also reflect
on the type of books that I read (more non-fiction) and the level of interaction
I create with my students. I will incorporate tips from both the Interactive
Read Aloud (Session 6), and the Read Aloud Facts and Tips presented above."
