Activity
4 ~~ Developing an Effective Classroom Library (45 minutes)
Objective: View some actual classroom
libraries, assess your own library, and create a plan to improve your
classroom's selection of appropriate reading materials.
Part I: Looking at Some Actual Classroom
Libraries
Context: Assuming you currently have
a classroom library, this activity is designed to help you assess its
functionality and take specific steps to increase its effectiveness.
Activity: Take a look at some actual
classroom libraries. Click on these Classroom
Library Photos. As you review these libraries, ask yourself what makes
these libraries effective and inviting (or not). You may want to take
notes on each library, recording the elements you think are either good
or need to be changed. Print a paper copy of the Classroom
Library Worksheet to record your thoughts.
Part II: Assessing your own Classroom
Library
Context: Now that you have viewed
a number of classroom libraries and made some decisions as to what features
were effective or not, let's turn to your own classroom library and see
if it reflects components that will make it inviting and effective.
Activity: To assist you in this analysis,
print out a copy of Sizing up Your Class Library.
Circle the statement that best describes
your library in each of the categories. For example, circle 150 if that
is the approximate number of books in your library.
Part III: Improvement Plan for Your
Classroom Library
Context: You have looked at other
teacher's libraries and used an analysis form to assess your own library.
Now it's time to combine your knowledge on effective libraries to construct
a plan to improve your own library. The plan should include the same variables
that were listed on the "Sizing up Your
Class Library" form.
Activity: Use Classroom
Library Tips to help improve your classroom library.
