   Session 2 - Activity 7

Activity 7 ~~ Reflection (1 hour)

Objective: Reflect on the practical applications of what you have learned in Session 2.

Rationale: In this session, you have read a great deal of information about early literacy components and practices. Now we would like you to take a few minutes to attempt to synthesize this information for practical application in your classroom.

Activity: Print out the chart used by Juel & Minden-Cupp to analyze the percentage of time spent and materials used for each of the four classrooms discussed in their article. Complete the chart to reflect the way you spend time and utilize materials in reading instruction. For each of your reading groups (High, Middle, and Low), enter the percentages in the chart of the time spent on the reading practices and the use of materials listed during reading instruction. Indicate both your current practices (under the Present Data heading) and changes you would consider implementing after having completed Session 2 (under the Projected Changes heading).

After completing the chart, answer the following two questions.

Question 1
What instructional changes will you make as a result of your work in Session 2? If you don't plan on making major changes, explain why.

Question 2
If you do plan to make changes, what are your main reasons for doing so?

When you're finished, please proceed to Session 3
