   Session 2 -- Activity 2

Activity 2 ~~ Stages of Reading (30 minutes)

Objective: Consider the issue of textual scaffolding as it applies to your students.

Activity: Read What kind of text-for whom and when? Textual scaffolding for beginning readers, by Kathleen J. Brown.

In this recent Reading Teacher article, Kathleen J. Brown addresses the challenge of finding an appropriate text match for the variety of students that teachers often have in their classes. This has become increasingly difficult, not only because of the range of students in many classes, but also because of competing philosophies about the most appropriate types of material for readers at different stages in the reading cycle. Brown explores this issue by sharing vignettes about three different types of students.

For Further Consideration: As you read Kathleen Brown's article, think about how the students she discusses compare with your students. Also, think about how the teachers' decisions are similar or different from your own classroom decisions.

When you're finished, please proceed to Activity 3.
