   Session 2 -- Activity 3

Activity 3 ~~ Stages of Reading in your Classroom (1 hour 30 minutes)

Note: When you complete this assignment, save your work to submit to the course facilitator.

Objective: Assess your students' current reading stages, and then use that information to consider possible modifications to current grouping, instruction, and classroom materials.

Activity A: The Stages of Reading and Your Class

Read Development of Literacy by O' Donnell & Wood's. Use the Class Stages Chart and list all of the students in your class. For each student, place a check mark in the column of the stage that most closely describes that student.

Use the following letters for the stages:

ER
Emergent Reader
IR
Initial Reading
T
Transitional
BL
Basic Literacy

Activity B: Implications for Grouping, Materials, Assessment, & Instruction

After charting the stages of reading for your class, please use a word processing software(for example, MSWord) and respond to the following four questions.

Question 1
Do you see any need to regroup your students? Briefly explain why or why not. If they need to be regrouped, can you reasonably accommodate the new groupings in terms of size and range of readers?

Question 2
Think about your materials. Are your current materials of appropriate level and type for your different readers? Also think about centers, classroom library and independent reading.

Question 3
Do you feel competent to assess your students' reading stages and levels? What type of additional knowledge, skills, and support do you need?

Question 4
Do you need to make any shifts in your instruction? If so, what type and for which groups?

Submit: Class Stages Chart, Reply to Questions 1, 2, 3, and 4. You should title this document "Session 2 Required Activity". Submit assignment to facilitator.

When you're finished, please proceed to Activity 4.
