Activity 4 ~~ Phonemic Awareness (45 minutes)

Objective: Consider the issue of phonemic awareness and how it affects instruction.

Activity: Read, Supporting phonemic awareness development in the classroom by Yopp & Yopp. When you've finished the article, reflect on your own knowledge base compared to the information provided, and think about the three questions listed below.

Context: The article by Yopp & Yopp contains a wealth of information about phonemic awareness. First, it explains phonemic awareness in relation to other sound-related terminology (i.e. phonics, phonetics, phonology). Second, it recommends an instruction sequence. Finally, it provides concrete activities to develop phonemic awareness.
