   Session 2 -- Activity 6

Activity 6 ~~ Theoretical Models & My School (45 minutes)

Objective: Explore a text comparing the practices and instructional outcomes of four first grade classrooms-and reflect on the outcomes in light of your own experiences.

Activity: Go to Ciera Report # 1-008 by Juel and Minden-Cupp.
When you're finished reading the article, take a few minutes to consider the questions outlined below. Pay particular attention to Table 13 and the limitations and discussion that end the paper.

Rationale: This is an important article for all primary school teachers, particularly first grade teachers, because of the scope of the investigation-a full year-its close analysis of the variety of instructional decisions that teachers make, and its inclusion of performance data by reading group.
Note: It might be helpful to download a copy in order to take notes while you read.

Question 1
Compare and contrast your instructional practices to the four classrooms. If you were in the study, which classroom would be yours? Or would your combination of instructional practices form a fifth type?

Question 2
After reading the limitations and discussion at the end of the article, what do you see as the potential impact on your current and future instructional decisions?

When you're finished, please proceed to Activity 7.
