   Session 2 -- Activity 9

Activity 6 ~~ Technical Report 1-008 (1 hour)

Objective: Consider sight vocabulary and word identification strategies.

Rationale: Earlier in this session, you reviewed the stages of reading, and began taking a closer look at specific literacy-acquisition areas, including phonemic awareness, phonics, and word attack. To close out this session, you will now complement those areas by considering sight vocabulary and word identification strategies.

Activity: Read pages 51-57 of Becoming a Reader, 2nd edition, by O'Donnell & Wood, 1999. Then think about the implementation of these practices in your classroom. How much time and instruction do you devote to sight vocabulary and the three cueing systems? In this session, you reviewed the stages of reading, and then began taking a closer look at specific literacy-acquisition areas, including phonemic awareness, phonics, and word attack. To close out this session, you will now complement those areas by considering sight vocabulary and word identification strategies.

When you're finished with this activity, please proceed to Activity 10.
