Bios of Authors

On behalf of Maryland Public Television and the Johns Hopkins Center for Technology in Education, we welcome you to this new online course in reading. My name is Dr. Suzanne Clewell and I am one of the authors of this course. Let me begin by providing a brief description of the contents. During this course you will examine the latest research and classroom techniques in teaching every child in the primary grades to be a successful reader. You will learn ways children develop language and the stages of reading development, and within literacy environments, you will have opportunities to explore specific, effective instructional approaches for literacy.

I join Dr. Clewell in welcoming you to the course and thank you for your interest in supplementing your knowledge and skills to help the primary reader. My name is Dr. Joe Czarnecki. I'm one of the co-authors of the course. During this course you will read articles, visit web sites, and view video clips of reading experts and classroom teachers. Using this information, you will then be asked to consider the implications of this content in the areas of assessment, instruction, and materials. You will also have an opportunity to apply specific techniques with your students.

At this point I invite you to review the syllabus. You may want to download a paper copy and place it in a course binder or other organizational method.

Once you have reviewed the syllabus, begin the course by clicking on the Session 1 button.
