Activities - PBIS Staff Survey

Introduction

The PBIS Staff Survey is used by the school as an initial and annual assessment of the behavioral supports in place in the school. The survey looks at the staff’s view of four aspects of the behavioral support systems in the school:

  • School-wide discipline systems
  • Non-classroom management systems (e.g. cafeteria, playground, hallway)
    Classroom management systems
  • Systems for individual students who engage in chronic problem behaviors.

The results of the survey are summarized and can be used for planning, decision-making, assessing change over time, building the staff’s awareness of supports in place and validating the team.
Conducting the Survey

a. Choose who takes the survey

The entire school staff completes the survey the first year. In later years the PBIS team can choose various portions of the staff to complete the survey. The following groups could take the survey: all of the staff at a staff meeting; individuals from the staff that form a representative group from the staff; or a focus group led by the PBIS team.

b. Decide how often to conduct the survey

Survey results are used to design an annual action plan and to make decisions/to help prioritize strategies. As a result, many schools complete the survey once a year, either at the beginning or end of the school year.

c. Conduct the survey

Steps
Staff members:
1. Complete the survey independently.
2. Set aside 20 to 30 minutes to complete the survey.
3. Base their rating on their individual experiences. If they do not work in one aspect of the school, i.e. classrooms, they do not complete questions concerning that aspect.
4. Mark the left side of the page with their view of the current status and the right side with their view of the level of priority they have for improving that feature.
