Environmental Aspects:
Proper Leadership Development
Creating the proper environment
where the leadership dynamic can form and grow is of vital importance and
greatly speeds the efforts to make change. There are necessary elements
to making the leadership dynamic effective.
Safety
has been an important and articulated consideration for human
existence since Maslow first formulated his hierarchy of needs.
While Maslow concentrated on the inherent need for people to feel
safe as a fundamental tenet of human existence, feeling safe in
an organizational surrounding is as essential to a truly effective
effort.
Safety in this organizational context is defined as the
ability for individuals to represent their perspectives and opinions
openly and honestly without fear of denigration. Leadership by
its inherent nature requires that much of the status quo will be
challenged as to its effectiveness in making a school environment
safe. People require a sense of freedom to question procedures
and protocols and offer alternatives to the present way of doing
things. Safety allows for that freedom to make a difference. Safety
in doing what is necessary to bring about change, gives rise to
trust, a vital organizational need.
