There is no simple solution
to school safety. Simple fixes relying on gross security measures --
ranging from metal detectors to armed guards --received mixed reviews not
only
in terms of cost and effectiveness in promoting safety, but also in
terms of
their impact on school atmosphere. Crime Prevention Through Environmental
Design (CPTED) takes a broader approach.
This tutorial introduces three interrelated topics: a working definition
of CPTED, the three basic concepts associated with CPTED, and a series of
eight key questions for interested parties to utilize when implementing
CPTED principles. Each topic presented in the tutorial builds on the other
toward the goal of providing participants with a sound plan to address those
issues specific to an individual school. An important feature of the tutorial
is the building of the CPTED team, which includes students, parents, law
enforcement professionals, school resource officers, school administrators,
teachers, business and government officials and other members of the community.
