Determine Physical Hazards:
Learning Strategy
The state of Washington has
developed an excellent web site to help the administrator assess possible
hazards that could occur in the school. Using the following information
from the state of Washington complete a hazard analysis for your school.
Include not only natural crises but also human crises.
A hazard analysis is an important initial step in putting your emergency
plan together because it allows you to identify the procedures, training,
and resources needed to respond and recover successfully from an event
resulting from any one of those hazards. You should not only identify the hazards
that may impact your school, you should also analyze the hazards with
respect
to:
Probability - How likely is it to occur?
Vulnerability - If it occurs, what effect will it have on your school
and its students and employees?
Frequency - How often does it occur (history)?
Speed of onset - How much warning would you have?
Duration - How long will it likely last?
Refer to the following website from the Attonery
General of Washington for complete hazard assessment information.
Review the website and develop
ways to utilize
the crisis plan.
In addition, the state of California has done extensive research
into best practices in school safety prevention. The following
web site focuses on the development of a Crisis
Response Box and is an outstanding resource.
