Promoting School Safety Through School Leadership: The Four Ps

Develop Personel Roles and Policies:

Learning Strategy

  • Create a flow chart showing the school chain of command should a critical incident occur. Make the chart available for the faculty and staff handbook.
  • Create a buddy system for your school to facilitate persons who cannot function alone. This system should encompass physically and mentally challenged individuals as well as those who cannot read or speak English.
  • Create a plan to disseminate safety information to students. Things to consider: Should teachers be asked to give information to students in, for example, homeroom? Physical education class? English class? Alternatively, should the administration be the responsible parties for information dissemination?

Small group instruction is recommended for many reasons. Primarily a serious tone can be communicated in an easier fashion in a small group setting. In addition, variations in information dissemination can be kept to a minimum when the same person or team is responsible for the communication.

  • Create an agenda for the safety inservice.
