Working with Schools - A Guide for Law Enforcement Officers

Roles an Officer Plays in a School:

As a Mentor

The students will immediately take notice of a law enforcement officer in a uniform. This will provide a lot of attention to be focused your way. All of your actions will be monitored and judged. While sometimes this extra attention can be cumbersome, this is the perfect way to begin mentoring students. Many will follow your lead based solely on the position you hold. If you hold yourself and your actions to a high standard, many students will also. Conversely, if you allow negative actions to go unpunished, the students will also pick up on that. Consistency is key when dealing with students. If you spend enough time in the school to have one on one interaction, such as in the cafeteria at lunch, you stand to have a greater impact on students ’ lives.
