Working with Schools - A Guide for Law Enforcement Officers

Roles an Officer Plays in a School:

As a Teacher

As an officer’s relationship with a school grows, the opportunity to teach a class may arise. The most likely subject an officer may be asked to teach is law. The class could be as simple as educating students on laws that may affect them, i.e. underage drinking, driving, etc., or as complicated as a discussion in constitutional law or how to handle a crime scene. These topics are critical to generating respect for police and cementing a positive opinion in the minds of students. Teaching can also expand the student’s opinion of what a law enforcement officer’s duties are. Many students are surprised at the amount of information on officer needs to know in order to effectively enforce the law.
