Just as schools have an obligation to maintain a safe school environment, law enforcement agencies have an obligation to provide police services to schools. School-based community policing programs such as the School Resource Officer Program have become one of the key strategies for school systems and law enforcement agencies in providing for safe and secure schools. It is vitally important that the School Resource Officer Program is implemented properly and the theory behind the program is understood. This tutorial addresses the following topics:
- Defining the role of a School Resource Officer and their responsibilities as law enforcement officers, law-related counselors, and law-related educators,
- Establishing the issues related to researching, developing and implementing an effective SRO program,
- Understanding the importance of the partnership between the school administrator and the SRO in maintaining a safe school environment.
