In addition to completing your schoolwork, taking care of your household responsibilities, and being a good friend, it is important to take care of yourself.

  How can you be a good student, good friend and good daughter or son if you aren’t taking care of yourself?
 
 

Engaging in healthy activities will help make your life as a student more enjoyable. If you are engaging in unhealthy activities, there is a plethora of information available to help you make healthy decisions.

In middle school and high school, some students will begin to experiment with and use drugs, alcohol and nicotine. Some kids do it because they think it makes them look cool. Some kids do it to get attention from their friends, parents, teachers or anyone who is willing to give it to them. Other kids do it because they are bored and think it might be fun. There have got to be at least a million better ways to have fun than by using drugs.

Follow-Up Activity:
  After reading over the list, think of some drug-free ways you can have fun. Add these ideas to the list.

Chances are you haven’t tried drugs. Did you know that the majority of middle and high schools students do NOT use drugs? To learn more about the effects of drugs on your body you are going visit a Web site with a wealth of information.

First, you will learn about how a healthy brain functions. Then you will take a look at what happens to the brain and the body when a person uses drugs. You will meet several kids who have used drugs and hear what they have to say about their experience. You will learn why they wish they had never even started using the drugs and why they are now committed to staying drug-free. Be sure to click on the “Activities” link on the left-hand side of the screen to examine the pop-up map, complete the Scavenger Hunt and take the Short-Term Memory Quiz.
