Creating Presentations Using Microsoft PowerPoint

Purpose:

This stand-alone lesson guides the user through the basics of a PowerPoint presentation. It includes adding new slides, inserting images, creating text boxes, inserting and changing graphs, choosing backgrounds, sorting slides, and running a presentation.

Mission:

You are the manager for an upcoming music group. You need to prepare a presentation that will convince a record company to sign the group.

Choose a Band Image:

  1. Create a new folder on your desktop and name it "band presentation."
  2. Go to http://www.mediaworkshop.org/bfs/day2/bandimages.html.
  3. Choose a band image and save it to the "band presentation" folder on the desktop.

Create a Presentation:

  1. Start Microsoft PowerPoint.
  2. Click on the radio button next to the Blank Presentation. Click on OK.
  3. Choose the slide that is completely blank. Click on OK.

Create a Presentation:

Add a picture of your band to Slide 1.

  1. Make sure that you are in Normal View. Switch by clicking the first button at the lower left corner of the screen.
  2. Insert the picture of the band that you have chosen. On the top menu bar, choose Insert -> Picture -> From File. Locate the correct image in the folder on your desktop. Highlight the image you want, and click Insert.
  3. Resize the image by clicking on the image once to highlight it. Click and drag one of the corners to resize and maintain correct proportions.
  4. Move the image by clicking once on the center, hold down the mouse and drag.

Add the name of your band.

  1. Add a Text Box using the text box button. Or from the menu bar, choose Insert -> Text Box.
  2. Position the cursor where you want the name of your band (it does not have to be exact, you can move it later).
  3. Begin typing the name of your band. Choose from the sample band names to the right, or come up with your own.
  4. You can now change the color, style and size of the text. First highlight the text. Click on Format -> Font from the top menu bar. A new screen will appear. This is where you can change the style, size and color. Experiment!

Sample Band Names:

  • Leelah Fernandez
  • Venus
  • Super Skinny Pitney
  • Anybody Else
  • Mister Thurston
  • More
  • White Noise

 

 

Save Your Work!!!

Go to File -> Save As -> Click on Desktop and name your file the name of your band.

Add a New Slide.

  1. Click the New Slide button. Choose the blank slide. Click then OK. Or, from the menu bar, choose Insert -> New Slide.
  2. Switch to the Outline View by clicking the outline view button at the lower left corner of the screen.
  3. Highlight the area next to slide #2 and type "Group Members".
  4. Switch back to the Slide View.
  5. Insert a text box on the slide under the title Group Members.
  6. With the cursor in the text box, click on the Bullets button . Type in the names of the band members (make up any names you want). Be sure to hit enter after the names.

Choose a Background.

  1. Click on the Apply Design button, or from the menu bar choose Format -> Apply Design. You may have to choose Presentation, or Presentation designs, depending upon your computer.
  2. Pick a design you like and click on Apply.

Save Your Work!!!

Reorder Slides.

  1. Add a slide that is titled "Song Titles".
  2. Switch to Slide Sorter View.
  3. Drag the Song Titles Slide so that it is slide 3.
  4. Double-click on the Song Titles slide and add a bullet list. Sample titles: Take That Hat Off!, Metamorphic Man, The POW Song.

Play the Slide Show.

  1. Return to the first slide.
  2. Click on the Slide Show button, or from the menu bar choose Slide Show -> View Show.
  3. Click anywhere to advance to the next slide.

Save Your Work!!!

Your Turn.

  1. Add another slide titled Musical Idols.
  2. Add graphics and text to the slide. You can search the Internet to find images and save them to the folder on your desktop.
  3. Transitions: See if you can figure out how to add transitions to your slide show. Can you time your slideshow to play automatically, without having to click through each of the slides?
