Overview:

The Baltimore Learning Communities (BLC) project is a multi-faceted education program that utilizes distance learning, interactive cable TV, and the Internet to connect schools to homes, places of work, and the community at large. The program provides extensive professional development training for teachers and extends a wide range of new educational opportunities to students at the middle and high school levels. This is a replicable program that address recommendations of the Goals 2000 Act, promotes life-long learning, and has strong school-work, school-home, and school-community components.

The four main elements of the program are:

1) The School - focusing on mathematics, social studies, science, communication, and the arts.

2) The Workplace - Connecting the school to the workplace through digital networks and interactive CD-ROM technology.

3) Connections - Using Internet connections, the students query existing databases to gather information. The teachers interact with a dynamic database to create lesson plans and learning activities for instruction in the classroom.

4) Digital Video on Demand - Our partnership with Discovery Communications, Inc. provides the project with 100 hours of high quality video that is indexed and available on demand to the teacher.
