Project Homepage:http://www.4directions.org Overview: Four Directions, created by Pueblo of Laguna Department of Education in New Mexico, blends American Indian culture with new educational technologies to revitalize curricula and instruction in Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) schools. Eight schools representing tribal groups in eight states have been selected as pilot sites for the project. Team members consisting of students, parents, teachers and community members develop authentic learning tasks drawn from the unique cultural context of each tribe. The tasks are then developed into the "Thematic cycles" which draw on the central components of core curricula. World Wide Web pages allow the tribes to share unique aspects of each American Indian group from the perspective of its own people. This provides students with a focal point for problem solving and for sharing important tribal cultural contributions. Project technologies are used by students to perform research on thematic issues, develop learning activities on the themes, explore other disciplines that are part of the theme cycles, and provide access to their results for authentic assessment.
