Project Homepage: Overview: Franklin County Public Schools is committed to preparing young people for further education and employment. While we believe that children must demonstrate mastery of basic skills and fundamental processes, we recognize and embrace technological literacy as an essential "basic" in a child's preparation. Furthermore, we believe that teachers are central to student learning and that effective staff development will invariably lead to greater student achievement. Accepting the Challenge is helping us to accomplish this vision by providing: 1. staff development and support services for all staff 2. staff development services for the southwest region of Virginia (Regional Professional Development Institute for Technology) 3. telecommunications access for Franklin County Schools Through this project, an on-going, training and support program has been established to meet the needs of all educators in our schools. Designed to be sustainable long after the project's official end, this program will serve as a model for our nation's rural schools. The Regional Professional Development Institute for Technology will provide an opportunity for our colleagues throughout southwest Virginia to come together in an exploration of the powerful classroom applications of technology. We anticipate that regional professional relationships will develop to strengthen and support our individual efforts and to provide a network of highly skilled educators who are effectively using technology to improve teaching and learning. The telecommunications access and infrastructure resulting from this project has helped Franklin County overcome the barriers and inequities that often plague rural schools. Information access, coupled with highly skilled and effective educators are the clearest evidence of the success of Accepting the Challenge. |
