Create Your Map for Success

A good voyager carries a map and an effective online learner does the same. The difference is that as an online learner, you must create your own map - a map that clearly lays out your goals and projected outcomes. As with any project worth undertaking, it is important to know 'why' you are doing it.

It is not hard to imagine how an online learner might temporarily 'lose their way' and need to consult their map to stay focused and engaged. Technology can fail and life certainly can throw curve balls. Having your map will help motivate you (and perhaps your teammates too) to get back on track quickly because the reason for and benefits of your journey will be clearly laid out in front of you.

Think about the following questions and then create your own map.

  • What is my main goal in taking the course for which I am registered? Is it personal, professional or both?

  • Will taking this course potentially increase my salary? Or is it part of a larger program that will likely increase my salary?

  • What are the benefits (salary increase not included) of taking this course?

  • Why am I taking this course in an online learning environment and not in a traditional face-to-face classroom?

  • What are the benefits of learning online?

  • I hope to learn the following from this course experience….
