Use Study Skills

Though online courses might look and feel different from face-to-face classes, many traditional study skills can be applied to help you be an effective electronic learner.

  • Be disciplined. Show respect for your work and classmates by sticking to your work plan, team protocols and class participation standards.

  • Familiarize yourself with the design of your course. At the beginning of the course, be sure to "take of tour" of the course and get comfortable with the layout.

  • Read the entire syllabus as soon as possible. It is helpful to review the syllabus at the start of the course to be clear about the class outcomes and expectations.

  • Set reminders for important dates. When your course gets going it's easy to loose track of time. It's a good idea at the start of your course to write down important dates (for assignments, chats, etc.) so that they don't sneak up on your or pass you by.

  • Prepare for large assignments, chats and tests. It's important to treat all online course assignments and tests with the same gravity as you would those in a traditional face-to-face class. Be sure to schedule ample time into your work plan to prepare well for assessments. This includes chats. There is pre-work to do before engaging in chats, which keep the pace quick, and information flowing.

  • Keep track of your assignment progress. Print weekly directions and check-off assignments as you complete them.

  • Work ahead when you can. You never know when you are going to be out of commission (sick, family emergency, computer failure, etc.) so when you can, work ahead. It's like buying coursework insurance. You may not need to use your cushion, but if you do, you'll be glad it's there.
