Online Learning and You: Characteristics

Do you have what it takes?

Online learning offers many exciting opportunities, but it may not be for everyone. Online students need to be motivated to succeed in their courses and take personal responsibility for their learning (Robbin, 2001; Fredericksen, Pickett & Shea, 2000).

Before signing up for an online course, examine your personal initiatives for taking the course online. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do I seek to learn as a result of the online experience?
  • Do I believe in the value of online education?
  • Am I willing to make changes to my daily schedule to accommodate an online course?
  • Am I comfortable with technology or easily frustrated?
  • Am I self-disciplined?
  • Do I manage time well?
  • Do I have good reading and writing skills?
  • Am I willing to commit to the time requirements of an online course?
