Online Learning and You: Professional Goals and Needs

Professional development is an integral part of school reform. President Bush has addressed teacher professional development in the "Leave No Child Behind" legislation introduced in January of 2001. According to this report, teachers teaching in core academic subjects must be "highly qualified" not later than the end of the 2005-2006 school year.

Teachers engage in professional development for a variety of reasons including:

  • To improve student learning
  • Career advancement
  • To expand range of teaching practices
  • Attainment of state or graduate credit
  • To improve salary
  • To learn about state of the art technology or materials
  • To network with other professionals
  • Personal interest in subject matter
  • To satisfy state or school requirements
  • To enhance one's subject matter knowledge

To consider your professional development objectives it can be helpful to compose a plan that will assist you in reaching your professional goals. Writing such a plan is an ongoing project. You will continually revise and adjust your professional development plan based on how your needs and aspirations change.
