If you have determined that online learning is a good fit for you, CTE wants you to put your best foot forward as an online learner. Research and feedback from our online course participants have shown that the following steps should be taken to help you to be an effective online learner.

For Fully Facilitated, Self-Paced, and Tutorial Courses:

  • Practice using the course site so that you become comfortable with using it and knowing where items and features are located
  • Read through all of the materials- including the syllabus, course protocols, and broad plans before the course begins
  • Set interim goals for yourself and keep them
  • Create a study schedule
  • Avoid interruptions - communicate to others that you will be working online
  • Be self-motivated and self-disciplined
  • Find a work station that has adequate lighting and a comfortable chair
  • Reflect upon your learning regularly
  • Approach the course with the knowledge that it may take more time than a traditional Face-to-Face course
  • Follow the established course protocols
  • Apply what you learn
  • Stay open minded about online learning
  • Use the critical thinking opportunities to the best of your ability
  • Enjoy communicating in writing
  • Create meaningful learning opportunities by directly applying the coursework to your every-day professional situations and needs.

Specifically For CTE's Fully Facilitated Courses:

  • Prepare to read all of the discussion postings in the discussion forum
  • Schedule ahead to participate in online chats
  • Plan on communicating with the facilitator often
  • Be a team-player
  • Speak up when you are having difficulties or have questions
  • Utilize good communication strategies
