Online Learning and You: Technical Skills and Requirements

Online courses do not require that you are a technical wizard; rather a basic understanding of computer applications is all that you will need. The boxes below outline the technical skills and technical requirements necessary for taking an online course with CTE.

Technical Skill Prerequisites:

  • Familiarity with copying and pasting text
  • Ability to save/download files to a local PC/Mac
  • Familiarity with the online course delivery platform (i.e., Blackboard, ELC) *A tutorial is available from CTE for online course participants to meet this prerequisite, if needed. Please contact us at onlinecourses@mail.cte.jhu.edu to inquire about this free tutorial.
  • Ability to open and save email attachments to a local machine, and attach documents to emails
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint software

Technical Requirements:

  • A reliable Internet connection - You will need to be able to access the Internet several times a day. Fast connections offered by DSL and cable modem lines are preferred, but are not necessary.
  • Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape - See the specific PC and Mac requirements below. Please note that if you use AOL as your Internet service provider, you must also have IE or Netscape in order to properly access CTE's online courses.
  • An active e-mail account
  • A word processing program like MS Word
  • MS PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
