Me-Maw's Exciting Life

Along time ago, a happy couple brought a lovely child into their life named Barbara Mae Johnson, who is better known to me has Me-Maw, who is now my loving grandma. She was born April 26, 1927 in Topeka, Kansas. Me-Maw is currently living in BelAir Maryland at this time.
Me-Maw had a very exciting infant life. When Me-Maw was a baby she won a baby contest that was held in Topeka ,Kansas. Her parents had entered her in the contest and had no idea that she would win.
Me-Maw’s baby years were very different from her childhood. Her best friend was Joan and she lived two houses down from her and they used to play all the time. During her childhood Me-Maw had a few chores. She had to dust and dry the dishes. Me-Maw’s favorite toy when she was growing up was a Mickey Mouse doll (the original one) and another favorite was a doll named Rosebud. Me-Maw liked to curl her doll’s hair with a curling iron. She would walk to school from Elementary School to Jr. High. Me-Maw got good grades in school , but sometimes she would get a bad grade. Me-Maw had a dog named Pudgy and it was a Boston Terrier. When Me-Maw had some spare time, which was every once in a while, she liked to play jacks with her friend Joan. Other times they would play something else. Me-Maw says “We had to entertain ourselves like playing ‘hide and seek’ and other games, especially during the summer time”. In the summer time, if Me-Maw and Joan would get bored they would go down to a park called Edge Wood Park and they would do crafts like soap carvings and board games. At Christmas time, Me-Maw said “they would hang their stockings on the edge of the bed and Santa would leave them oranges and nuts, and if you were lucky you would get a candy cane.” Instead of buying milk from the grocery store, a milkman would come buy and deliver milk in glass bottles and it was pulled buy a horse carriage. Back then, they kept refrigerated items cold in an icebox. Me-Maw said “the ice person would come around to your house and put the ice on the top rack of your icebox.” When Me-Maw was growing up, they didn’t have televisions, so they had to listen to the radio for their favorite shows. Me-Maw’s favorite was Little Orphan Annie and it came on at dinner time. Her dad would always say “You’re eating as fast as the radio show is playing”. Me-Maw’s childhood was very different from my childhood in many ways. Me-Maw didn’t have computers, televisions and they made up a lot of games.
Now Me-Maw had to worry about her teenage years and they were much different from her childhood. In Jr. High and High School, Me-Maw’s favorite teacher was her biology teacher because she made it interesting. Me-Maw’s favorite class was science because she was really interested in it, and she wanted to do something that had to do with science. When she went to school, she couldn’t wear pants, so she had to wear dresses, unless it was really cold out. When Me-Maw was growing up the prices were extremely different from today. You could buy a loaf of bread for $.10. When Me-Maw wasn’t in school she enjoyed playing jacks. Me-Maw says “That it was fun to see how many jacks you could fit in your hand in a limited time”. MeMaw’s first job was in the summer during high school and she worked at the paper company where her dad worked.. She sat there all day putting letters in envelopes. Me-Maw says “It was pretty boring, but it could be fun at sometimes”.
Me-Maw graduated from college and Me-Maw’s lifetime job was a microbiologist at the Veterans Hospital. A microbiologist is someone who works with bacteria. Me-Maw is now retired.
MeMaw married William Fredrick Myers. They got married in 1951 in Topeka, Kansas. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They met at the University of Kansas. They went on their honeymoon about 60 miles away from Kansas. It was a health resort. They had three wonderful children together named Steven Daniel Myers born on February 13, Linda Mae Myers born on August 27, and Janet Kay Myers born on August 27.
Now that Me-Maw is all grown up, her favorite thing to do is sew. She sews for fun. Me-Maw can make nice soft fleece blankets and other stuff too. Something that my Me-Maw would like to do is to go on one of those sleigh rides that are drawn by horse carriages. She says ”We don’t get enough snow, we would probably have to go to New York or somewhere up north”.
Me-Maw has been a wonderful grandmother to me and my personal memory would have to be letting my sister, Alyssa and I spend the day with her and my grandfather, D-Dad. Me-Maw would pick us up at my house and take us to the movies and let us get to pick whatever candy we wanted. When the movie was over we would go to Blockbuster and pick out a movie there. Then she would take us back to our house and let us watch the movie. We would stay up really late. When we would wake up the next morning, they would be cooking us either pancakes or French toast. I have many memories with Me-Maw and some with my granddad too, but spending the night at their house would have to be my best one.
