At the flagship Maryland Technology Academy Leadership Program, educators learn to use technology to enhance instruction for improving student learning. Teachers learn how to design instruction aligned with Maryland state standards using technology to address diverse learning styles, special needs and classroom management issues. Participants, known as Fellows, learn the leadership skills necessary to assist others in their buildings to use technology more effectively. This is accomplished through an annual 3-week summer institute and several follow-up sessions throughout the school year. Additionally, Fellows communicate and collaborate with each other using a dynamic web-based online learning community.

Academy Fellows collaborate with their administrators and peers from similar school settings to develop a technology-based instructional plan aligned with their school improvement plans. These plans vary according to technology resources and individual school improvement needs. Fellows research, design and develop student learning activities and professional development for their peers. The focus is on constructing and assessing student learning activities that incorporate technology to support the Maryland Content Standards, Skills for Success and the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum.
