Using WS_FTP to Transfer Files
WS_FTP is the program used to perform file transfers from your
computer to another remote computer.
1. Connecting to the Server
- Locate the WS_FTP program on your windows desktop, double
click on it to launch the program. You will see a Session
Profile dialog box. This box enables you to enter information
about the FTP server that you wish to connect to. You may also
select from some of the more popular sites which have already been
configured in the program by selecting them from the Profile
Name list box found at the top of the dialog box. However,
if you wish to go to a new or unlisted FTP server, click on the
New button.
- In the Host Name box, type in the host name or
network address of the FTP server.
(cte.jhu.edu)
- Leave the Host Type box set as 'Auto Detect',
for WS-FTP to guess the server's operating system.
- Click the Anonymous Login option at the right of
the window to log in as a guest user.
- Enter your complete email address in the password field.
2. Performing the File Transfer
- Once you have been granted access to
cte.jhu.edu, you'll notice that
WS-FTP displays information about your files on the left screen
(called the Local System), and the CTE server's files on the right
screen (called Remote System).
- Upon entering, you will see a
"techacademy" folder. Inside that
folder, each MTA fellow has their own folder. They are listed by
last name (for any duplicate last names a first initial was added
at the end - such as DAVIS-S, or JONES-T).
- Note: At the right side of each screen are buttons that enable
you to create, and delete directories, or change to a new working
directory.
- To get around from one directory to another, simply
double-click on the directory names in the 'Remote System' screen.
(PLEASE, ONLY DOUBLE CLICK ON YOUR NAME.) The same
is applicable to your own 'Local System' screen. Remote system is
the Server you are attached to. Local System is your PC. All
Drives on your PC should be visible. Please create your
"webquest" folder on the remote
server at this time. Please make sure you are in your personal
directory before creating a webquest sub-directory.
- Before transferring any file, you should select the transfer
method. If your files are text-only documents, choose the
ASCII option. For all other types of files, choose
the Binary option. These options can be found at the
bottom of the screen.
- To perform the file transfer, select the files that you wish
to transfer by clicking on them. You can select multiple files by
holding down the CTRL key while clicking on the respective
files.
- Finally, click the arrow that points toward the right (remote
system) to transfer your files to the server. After the transfer
is complete, you can terminate the connection by clicking the
Exit button.
- After you move your files into a directory, the web page will
be available immediately at this address:
http://cte.jhu.edu/techacademy/fellows/[username]/webquest/[yourfilename.html]/
.
A word about security ...
At the present time, everyone has TOTAL access to all files and
folders located at http://cte.jhu.edu/techacademy/fellows/, so please
be careful when moving files. You could easily erase other accounts
or files if you are not paying attention. If it's deemed necessary,
we can create password protected NT accounts for everyone at a later
time.
