What characteristics of our surroundings influence where we choose to live?


 





Goal:

At the end of the this activity, you will: Remember you will need to share your expertise with the other people studying the same city as you. Your team is counting on you to find out about your assigned expert area and be able to explain it to them. At the end of this activity, your team will have diagrams about all the geographic factors and all team members will be able to discuss all of the different geographic factors. Roles: For this activity, you will take one of these roles: Geographer (Expert on landforms): Your job is to learn about different types of landforms (such as mountains, valleys, or plans), why they are important, and how they effect where cities develop.

Geographer (Expert on waterways): Your job is to learn about different types of waterways (such as rivers, oceans, and lakes), why they are important, and how they effect where cities develop.

Agricultural expert on soil: Your job is to learn about are the contents of soil, why soil is important, and how the type of soil influences how a city develops.

Agricultural expert on vegetation: Your job is to learn about vegetation (the plant life that is natural to an area), why this is important and how it affects how a city develops.

Meteorologist (Expert on climate): Your job is to learn about climate (the overall picture of year-round weather conditions of a certain area, why it is important, and how it affects where people decide to live.
 

Steps:
  1.  Visit the What characteristics of our surroundings influence where we choose to live? link(s) pertaining to the your job (that is, expert on landforms, waterways, soil , vegetation, or climate). Carefully read the information provided. Remember the techniques you have studied to read to be informed. You may want to print out the reading passage so you can highlight or underline the main ideas.
  2. Save a picture you found on the Internet that is relevant to your area of expertise onto your diskette.
  3. Take notes about the main ideas you read.
  4. Complete the following diagram.
