World Wide Web Glossary
What is the World Wide Web? A way of organizing information on the Internet. It is a collection of computers that share information by means of hypertext links. It consists of servers, clients, a protocol (http) and documents created using html ( Hyper Text Markup Language).
What is http? The phrase "http" is the protocol used by the World Wide Web. Protocols are the instructions that tells your computer how to receive and send hypertext documents and data from other computers.
What is a WWW server? A server is any computer that provides network services and resources to other computers. They are also called "hosts". A web server is a computer running special software which is able to respond to requests from Web clients. IN other words, the server performs a very simple task - it simply sends the requested file across the Internet to the you, the user, who has requested it.
What is a WWW Client? This is the term given to any computer that has "client software" it needs to sahre information and is connected to the Internet.
What is Client Software? This is software that allows your computer to talk, communicate, and share information with Internet host computers and Internet servers.
What is HTML? HTML ( HyperText Markup Language) is a method of encoding plain text files. HTML documents can contain on-screen forms or images. These HTML codes can be used to create hypertext links.
What is Hypertext?
Hypertext allows you to follow a "link" ( usually represented by
an underlined or highlighted word, text passage, or picture), on
the page you are viewing, which will retrieve another resource of
information ( text passage, picture, sound item, video, etc.).
On the WWW, a link could lead
you to a document in a different system on the other side of the world.
What is a URL? An address that makes it possible for a GUI Browser like Netscape to locate hypertext and hypermedia documents on the WWW. It is a universally accepted way of locating a resource available via the Internet. The URL for our county homepage is: http://www.pgcps.org
What is GUI? It is pronounced like "gooie". It is an acronym for Graphical User Interface. Graphics or icons are used instead of DOS. In DOS you must type words to command the computer to do operations. GUI is a way of using pictures. Apple Macintosh was the first personal computer to use a graphical user interface.
