Introduction

We will be celebrating another year where we will be actively and ethically approaching new horizons.  One of the newest components we will be working on this year is our school web page.   Another visit from Govenor Parris Glendening and our corporate sponsors, and a premiere visit from our new Superintendent, Dr. Iris Metts will be on our calendar for September.  We will need to design and publish our school web page so we will be able to communicate to our community and parents our plans for the upcoming school year.  This WebQuest will introduce you not only to the correct design of a Webquest, but allow us to examine and critique other school web pages.  We need to consider the efficiency, aesthetics, design and presentation of good web pages and use this knowledge to enable us to create a design for our school page.

Let the Quest Begin

The Task

You will be working in pairs, to search and evaluate other School Web Pages, and come up with a final draft of what you feel should be included in ours.  This plan will then be submitted to Sue Creamer, so she can use this as a basis for her inservice on Designing the School Web Page.

Keep these key questions in mind as you go through this WebQuest:

The Process

Words and Acronyms -  a glossary of World Wide Web  terms

Task #1
Why do we need a web page?

  • Using our clock worksheet, take 3 minutes to reserve a time to meet with another staff member by writing their name next to one of the hours on the clock.  Be sure that the two of you have each other's name on the same time line. (see  Clock Worksheet).  Complete all hours on your clock.  When the "Cheers" theme is over, you should be back at your computers.
  • Meet with your _____ o'clock buddy.   (time to be decided by leader)
  • Using the 30-20-10 Partner Response Activity,  ( Partner A speaks for 30 seconds- then Partner B speaks.   Then Partner A for 20 seconds...and so on), discuss the purpose for our school to have a web page.
  • Using Microsoft Word, teachers will create a list of ideas.  This will help guide you in viewing pages later in the WebQuest.

Task #2

Searching the Web and Completing A Web Page Evaluation Sheet

Now meet with your ____o'clock buddy (time to be decided by leader)

  • Computer A - This buddy will be the Researcher on  Laptop A.
  • Computer B - This buddy will be the Evaluator  on Laptop B.

( For further help - see Tech Tip Section )

  • Researcher ( A ) -Use the links in the Chart found in the Resource Section to search for different web pages. Some of these will be school pages, some will not.
  • Evaluator  ( B )- Complete the Evaluation Sheet Template for each web page you visit.  Be sure to print each sheet.  Make a note if you find any particular site that you feel you want the teachers to see.   Please be sure that you have visited at least 5 sites that are listed in the Resource Section.  If you know of any other sites, feel free to go and do an evaluation sheet on them.  Remember, we have a great source with our county site, www.pgcps.org.  Look under the Resource section.

Task #3

Selecting the most outstanding site.

Now meet with your ____o'clock buddy (time to be decided by leader)

  • Share with your partner the site that you felt was the most outstanding, according to your checklist.  Also tell them what componets or what about the design that made you choose that to be your favorite.

Task #4

SMARTboard and Inspiration

  • Utilizing the SMARTboard (our electronic whiteboard), representatives from the various teams will use Inspiration software to create a diagram of the components they are most interested in seeing on our own school web page.
  • Save this to a SMARTboard notebook.
  • Print this web design.
