The Introduction

Beginning in the 1860's, Eduard Manet and the Inpressionists started what became a major influence on a group of art students.  Shocking at this time were paintings produced with sparkling light, shimmering water, and the everyday life of the middle class.

Let's explore the world of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and be able to identify and explain each style.  At the end of this assignment, using the Web Quest, you will be able to go to any museum and identify paintings by styles and artists.

The Task

You are in a group of docent , in an art museum, who have been assigned the task of preparing audio talks for a new exhibit to be displayed on Impressionistic and Post Impressionistic paintings. The museum curator expects everyone to prepare a script to be read by someone with a french accent.  The script should be written in first person, as if the artist was speaking, and should include:  information about his childhood, art schooling, painting style, and acceptance into the art community

The Process

1. Students will work in groups of 3-4.  Names of artists will be picked out of a hat.  Each person in your group is to research one of the following: (group will divide the jobs among themselves)

  • childhood and dates of birth and death
  • art education training
  • painting style- Impressionism or postimpressionism of:

  • Monet- Renoir- Degas-Cezanne-Seurat-Van Gogh
  • acceptance into the art world of their time

  •

    2. Once one person from each group has picked an artist the curator
expects the entire group to look at the resources and record their personal
opinion of the work based on the elements of art and principles of design:

    3. After each group has previewed the paintings,  each member is to research his/her particular area related to the specific artist.

    4. Once you have researched your particular area, get together with your entire group and discuss your findings. Use this opportunity to add and delete the most appropriate information that you were asked to research for your group.

    5. After each member has contributed his/her ideas, you should write your part of the talk.  When all parts have been written, all parts should be read and revised by the entire group. A final "talk tour" should then be written.

    6. Rehearse your "french actor" to speak in the tone of voice that will be
pleasant to the listener.  Make certain that he/she gives directions for
the specific paintings that will be studied by the viewer, as well as
    the speed of the voice.

    7. Rehearse the talk, you may want to add some soft  impressionistic music,
but make certain that it fits in and is appropriate for the timing of the
talk.  Cue the actor to talk slow enough to be understood, but not
too slowly so that the presentation drags (should last 20 minutes)

    8. After the entire group is satisfied with the recording, submit to the
curator ( teacher ) for final approval.

    Conclusion

After completing this Web quest you should have a better understanding of the artists can influence one another's work; as well as, the ability of an artist to analyze previous ideas and modify them to create a very personalized form of expression.  Hopefully you will apply this new knowledge to your assignments in the art room.
