Everybody Needs a Rock by: Byrd Baylor

No matter who you are, you need a rock. However, there are ten rules to follow in finding the one that is perfect for you. Read this book to find out how to locate your PERFECT rock and then complete some of these activities!

Bring in rocks and pebbles of varying sizes, shapes, and colors. With partners, place the rocks and pebbles into groups. Then share your reasons for grouping them the way you did. Mix the rocks and repeat the classifying using different characteristics. Discuss the use of different senses you used when classifying the rocks.

Create a list of tools that could be used to make observing rocks more detailed and accurate.

After reading the book, discuss the rules for choosing a rock with a partner. As partners, create more rules that could be used.

Your class is going to play a game with the rocks you have in the classroom. Write a paragraph to your classmates describing a rock you have selected. Use words dealing with the senses of sight, touch, hearing, and smell to describe your rock. Use word about size and shape. Give as much information to your classmates as you can without telling which rock is yours.  The rocks will be displayed on a table. You will read your paragraph and your classmates will try to identify the rock you are describing.
