The Big Rock by: Bruce Hiscock



This book traces the origins of a granite rock located near the Adirondack Mountains and describes how it reveals information about the history of the earth. Read this book to find out the history of a rock and then complete some of these activities!
 

Research the job of geologists. Write a letter to a classmate describing the main responsibilities and goals of a geologist.

Research granite. Find out how it forms, how man has used granite throughout history, & current uses of granite.

On sentence strips, illustrate a sequence of events depicting the origin of the granite rock. Use words and pictures to share your information.

Predict what will or could happen to the big rock in the future. Defend your prediction and connect it to the book.

In your journal, explain how weathering and erosion change rocks.

Answer this question in you journal: Think about the information you just read in the book. What other information about granite do you wish the author had included? What resources could you use to find this information?

Your school is creating a book of poetry to be sold at the school science fair. Write a poem describing how the Big Rock was formed. Think about the information you learned about the rock while reading the book.
