Environmental Issues of Tawain:
| Taiwan has enjoyed rapid industrial development over the past four decades. Unfortunately, this development has had a fairly negative impact on the island's environment. The growing awareness of this fact by both the public and government has propelled an environmental protection movement throughout the Taiwan area. Thus, the single-minded concern for stimulating economic growth that was prevalent in the 1960s and 1970s has slowly given way to a more balanced way of thinking, in which consideration is given to the short- and long-term environmental costs. As Taiwan today approaches developed-nation status, its people are starting to demand a quality of life commensurate with their level of economic achievement. The accelerated democratization of the Republic of China over the past decade has also helped, givingthe public greater power to demand accountability from the government with regards to protecting the environment. |
President Lee and the Tawainese people are
very concerned with the conservation of the planet. There are strict regulations
in Tawain against pollution from businesses, people and government agencies.
President Lee has made clear his concerns for the future of the mainland's
natural resources. He wants a unified China to practice the same environmental
consciousness and practices as the Republic of China.

China's Three Gorges Dam Project is the largest hydroelectric project ever attempted in the world. The plan to dam the Yangtze River would flood six counties, displace 1.2 million people and submerge 100,000 hectares of cropland.
