Project Title:

The Scientific Method

Grade Level:

4th grade

Subject/Topic Area(s)

Science/ Math/Language Arts

Designed By:

School District:

Prince Georges County

School:

Beltsville Academic Center

Goal:

To provide a resource for students to utilize that will enable them to review concepts and the process of the scientific method. With class discussions, investigations, and the completion of the tutorial, the students will be able to identify the steps in the Scientific Method, conduct their own investigations, create a slide show, and present their project to the class.

Content Standards:

1.5.1 Access and process information from readings, investigations, and/or oral communication.

1.5.18 Apply scientific concepts to understand a new situation.

Project Summary:

This multimedia PowerPoint project is a tutorial/ resource for students. It will identify the stages in the scientific method and key concepts related to the scientific process. The project will be divided into five sections, Objectives, Tutorial, Key Concepts, Assessment, and Web Resources. The project will be non-linear so that students can link to the section that they need help in.

Objectives/Desired Results

The learner will be able to:

  • identify and describe the steps in the scientific method.
  • demonstrate the ability to conduct or design an investigation or experiment using the scientific process.
  • formulate a question that can be answered by an investigation or an experiment.
  • collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data.
  • use technology to communicate experiments or investigations to others.

Plans for Facilitation:

  • Prepare materials, tools, and resources.
  • This tutorial is one component of a six-week unit on The Scientific Process.
  • Students will be introduced to the scientific process by brainstorming ideas about what they already know. Inspiration will be used to create the web.
  • Working in groups, students will use the scientific method to conduct a small investigation to discover what happens when you mix two colors of paint together.
  • Students will use the PowerPoint tutorial to reinforce the concepts they have been taught and to complete an assessment.
  • Working in groups, students will complete the Science Plus performance task entitled "Ball Games".
  • Additional investigations using AIMS will be conducted.
  • As a cumulating activity, students will select an investigation to conduct. They will work in groups. They will use Kid Pix to present their projects.

Students will:

need to be familiar with the Inspiration software.

need to be familiar with Kid Pix.

need to be familiar with the keyboard.

work independently.

work cooperatively.
