Project Title:

Power through the Human Systems

Grade Level:

Seventh grade

Subject/Topic Area(s)

Human body systems

Designed By:

Date:

August 9, 2000

School District:

Harford County Public Schools

School:

North Harford Middle School

Goal:

North Harford Middle School is constantly working to upgrade and enhance the learning environment for all students. In the past two years, there has been a special focus to increase student comprehension, and written expression. Equal access to technology for all students and teachers will help to increase student achievement in these areas. These tools will be integrated into classroom activities and will be used in problem solving thus also bolstering technology literacy. My science classroom can support this vision by engaging students in real-life applications of science and focusing on enriching basic skill development in reading and writing. Students will use computers in all aspects of Life Science. Students will conduct research, design and produce materials, manipulate educational CD-ROMs, and assess their own learning using these technology tools. I want to increase my own knowledge of technology to help increase student understanding of material by using a variety of multi-media equipment.

Content Standards:

  • 3.8.3 Students will analyze concepts (i.e. diseases, deficiencies, toxins, and other factors) that promote or disrupt the structure and function of living organisms. (MLO 3.3)
  • Collaborate with peers, experts, and others using telecommunications and collaborative tools to investigate curriculum-related problems, issues and information, and to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Project Summary: Students will work cooperatively to inform their classmate on the power of all human systems. Each group will be given a different human system to research. Students will use the strategy of PowerPoint, writing to inform, to create a cover slide and a slide for the "role and function" of their specific human system. Students will then work independently in an assigned "role". As Doctor, Physical Trainer, Dietitian, Graphic Designer, or Integrator they will extend and refine knowledge of their human body system to create information for other students to keep their systems healthy.

Finally, students will use Inspiration to create webs for the purpose of linking together all principles and knowledge from presentations on the human body systems. This will be used as a reflection tool to help student integrate knowledge and gain an understanding that all human systems work together.

Objectives/Desired Results (What will the learners understand as a result of this project?)

Students will use reading and writing to create a power point presentation on a human body system. They will learn note-taking skills, cooperation, computer Internet and CR-ROM skills, peer editing skills, and PowerPoint techniques.

Plans for Facilitation:

I plan to use the media center for teacher and student collection of resources. The students will use their resources to create storyboards of each slide. Students will work together on the title slide and the first slide on the "role and function" of the human system. Then students will work individually to create slides that address their group "role". Storyboards and peer editing will take place in the classroom. The PowerPoint will be created in a separate lab in the school.

Instructional Resources:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Internet
  • CD-ROM
  • Digital Camera
  • Computers

Type of Assessment Used (e.g. observations, work samples, electronic discussions, dialogues)

  • Student work samples
  • Observation of group work
  • MSPAP scores

Scoring tool (e.g. rubric) to be used for evaluation. Be as specific as possible.

I will use a rubric to evaluate each section of the project (research notes, storyboards, and PowerPoint). I will look for student use of graphics, backgrounds, pictures, titles, sound, and content relevant to each student "role".

Rubric:
