Project Title:

Kid Pix in the Curriculum

Grade Level:

Elementary

Subject/Topic Area(s)

Language Arts/Science

Designed By: Karen Striley

Date: August 1, 2000

School District: Anne Arundel County

School: West Meade ES

Goal:

The students will write to inform by creating a slide show on an endangered animal. The students will demonstrate pre-writing strategies by completing a story board as an organizer for their slide shows.

Content Standards:

  • The students will be able to write informational reports for an intended audience and purpose that frame a key question, present a literal understanding of the topic and includes facts and details that illuminate the main idea.
  • The students will be able to interpret and communicate findings (i.e. speaking, writing and drawing) in a form suited to the purpose and audience, using developmentally appropriate methods including technology tools and telecommunications. (Science 1.3.9)

Project Summary:

The staff at West Meade need to be fully instructed in the creation of Kid Pix slide shows, both with the students and as a tool if they want to use it.

Objectives/Desired Results (What will the learners understand as a result of this project?)

The staff will understand, be comfortable with and be able to use Kid Pix slide shows with their classes.

The students will write to inform by creating a Kid Pix slide show with teacher support.

Plans for Facilitation:

  • The staff will have completed a pre-assessment before attending to give the instructors information on how well they are integrating technology into their curriculum.
  • The staff will self evaluate themselves at the beginning of the session (1=low comfort level, 2=medium, 3=high) and form pairs, using a comfort line, of 1 and 3 and 2 and 3 to work together during the in-service.
  • During the Power Point presentation, the staff will be able to work along with the presentation on Power Point using pre-made slides on disk and 1 slide they create and save themselves for review.
  • The instructor and lab assistant will be able to facilitate as needed. A printed copy of the presentation will also be provided.
  • Using a Power Point presentation, the instructor will go through the steps using Kid Pix.
  • The staff will also receive a paper copy of the Power Point presentation to use as a guide.
  • The staff will be given practice time and the opportunity to work within their grade groups to discuss problems and lab management concerns.
  • The staff will complete an assessment of the in-service. This will also address were other areas of staff development are needed.
  • The staff will complete slide shows with their classes in order to present them during parent conferences.
